I remember my first visit to James Read's practice in 1986. It was impressively (obsessively) organised for the benefit of patients. My colleague who accompanied me want to move to Loughborough so that that James could be her GP.
On another occasion I sent a prospective customer (an excellent practice where I was a patient at the time) to see the abies GP system (the predecessor of AAH Meditel System 5 ) in action they were impressed and overawed, but they later told me that if using the abies system required the commitment to general practice they saw at James's practice it wasn't for them. (they bought Vamp).
James has had a lot of stick, some of it may be deserved, but his contribution and commitment to primary care should not be underestimated.

Subject: Read 3?
I went to visit James Read's practice in the late 1980's when we were
considering buying a clinical computer system for our practice. We 'borrowed'
a couple of ideas from his practice that we still use ( with some adaptations
) today. The appointment system, which includes appointments that are released
with different time periods for patients to book to see GP's.We have a large
board in our common room that has notified on it by 'docs' hospital
admissions, deaths and deliveries that month so that we all know ( to some
extent ) what's going on the practice.
He had other good ideas apart from the Read codes.
