Ian,
>Jeff - What do you mean exactly by prescribing indicators.
Things like:
80% of all NSAID scripts to be from ibuprofen, diclofenac, naproxen and
indomethacin;
less than 20% of all diclofenac scripts to be for modified release
preperations;
less than 30% of all oral hypogycemic scripts to be for glibenclamide or
chlorpropramide;
or
less than 10%,5% or 2.5% of all inhaled steroids to be fluticasone.
Fulfilling these prescribing indicators is said to influence the prescribing
budget allocated to you. Some HA's don't use them at all.
Unfortunately the two main factors which influence prescribing budgets seem
to be
1. how much money the HA has available, and
2. your previous budget.
Advert mode on ;)
The other thing that seems to have an influence is to hire a part time
prescribing support pharmacist. It shows the HA that you are taking your
overspend (however unfair) seriously, and is increasingly considered to be a
"good thing". Funding shouldn't be too much of a problem, usually you can
pay them by topslicing your drugs budget.
