Yes, it's brilliant. I used it today in fact to load the new version
of the eBNF onto my PC at work. The machine on my desk doesn't have a
cdrom, so I use DCC to share the cdrom from my laptop. When both
machines were at home I used to connect them to each other to back up
files from one to the other, just as you describe. The main problem is
that, without extra software, you have to manually select and copy
files, so it's no good for backing up large amounts.
You can either connect with a "laplink" cable via the parallel ports
or using a null modem cable via two serial ports. You can access all
disks and the printer on the host machine. As well as installing the
DCC software you also need to enable file sharing from network setup.
