I don't think we're any worse off than comparably waged professionals.
However, the ability to take off an odd day here or there while knowing
the work is being covered would be an important symbolic safety valve.
Thus a regional pool of locums who could cover for a day or two without

notice, would go a long way to the perception of being valued.

I don't see that logic.
Our salary structure is already supposed to equalise different
demographic demands. By having to make special arrangements for a
specific area at a specific time, the basic structure is at fault and
should be addressed rather than this patchwork of special deals which
always have a knock-on effect with fixed pools of money.
