Hi Steve - I was hoping you might have been at the Open Forum yesterday
in the Motorcycle Museum.
I like it.
There are some bugs - but not big for us. There is something about
multiple labels for dispensers being a problem though - not sure about
this.
The new version is out this month (from today) and is on a staged roll
out.
The reporting is easier than Sys5 but is still pretty difficult to get
ones head around - but lends itself more to learning on the fly than did
Sys5 - also they will be releasing a Reports Wizard to beta in the not
too distant future.
The best thing about Sys 6000 is that it is like System 5 in structure -
and no-one beats this (as you know).
It seems fast enough on my 233s with 32 meg and Cat 5 network (have put
in an identical to set up I put in at Brinklow - only I've managed to
get around to tidying the wires up at the hub end!)
Your branches may be an issue - although I think it is a kilostream link
you have to one of them so this will probably be ok - am I right.
I have been offered an ISDN (4 - I think) solution - that will run the
GUI but will be slow. Obviously terminals would be faster - but
difficult to move to this from the GUI at our main site. I think the
branch and mobility thing is an area that you could focus on.
Ours has been pretty stable for the last 2 months - pleased re this.
Support is an issue - it is truly excellent once you are through - but
they play you message that suggests you put the phone down if you have
waited over 3 minutes cos this means they are very busy!!! Lets hope
the coastguard havent moved to this approach when I phone from my
sinking boat eh ;-)
Good integration with Word and Excel - like this a lot - has to be the
way forward ie opening things out a bit more - the same re scanning but
I'm not doing this yet - also re digital images etc
Meditel have been v supportive and helpful - I am generally v pleased
with the service - after some initial 'strained' conversations.
They are refreshingly up front - they publish a monthly guide to bugs
and workarounds - and give an idea when they will be fixing it (and the
priority they are giving it)- how about asking for this *before* they
come and demo. They encourage bug reporting. They all go along to the
Open Forum and take what flack gets thrown at them - all signs of a good
company if you ask me (but you are already a Meditel customer so you
know this - although I do think that they didnt used to be so customer
focussed as they are now - they have a new MD - 3 weeks ago and he seems
a sorted out, 'go get 'em' sort of bloke.
They should have RFA4 early next year - but not got it yet.
Watch out for licensing - ask em about if you access from home do they
insist on a separate license - same for laptops etc - i do not know the
answer to this question and would be interested to hear.
Ohm and the Sophies are better and faster and less constraining - in
fact I think I will use them BUT - our ones are currently the 4 char
Read versions and we have 5 char Read - so I will wait until the Sophie
service packs are out before I run this way.
They supply handy hints on a monthly basis - and some other good stuff.
They also send a floppy with online info - and plan to cover more and
more in this - egFAQs for reports etc - this is also available on the
web-site - but has a restricted area for this.
Well - sorry not to knock it more - but I do truly like it and it does
seem to work - and Meditel are open about the odd bits that dont - I do
like their attitude - praps Bill Gates could learn something.
If you want to pressurise the demo person - go for the branch thing and
get them set up a report that you devise.
Oh, Links has been iffy at times - difficult to pin down fault - they
always blame Racall but it is not always the case - they spent some good
time helping us sort it and it seems ok now.
Cheers
HTH
PS I have no pecuniary interest.
