<<Hmm.. I think the point of clinical governance is that the professions
set the standards - what's wrong with that?>>
Not what I understand about it. It is put out as clinical leadership etc
etc but it places the onus on the managers to write all the reports etc.
There are plenty of safeguards already to pick up the bad doctors---as I
said, the professional will has been lacking and this new system will (if
it works) most likely further reduce the professional will because CG will
be seen as yet another management weapon.
In my eight years in Newtownstewart I have been extremely tolerant of
mistakes but when pushed I have taken all necessary action. As a result,
one district nurse, one hospital manager and one doctor working in a
non-NHS capacity have all been called to account for extreme errors and
terrible behaviour, with the result that none of them are now working in
those jobs.
And the refrain has been from all sides, oh we knew he/she was awful; oh
thank you for putting it in writing, no-one would.
Like I say, there have been plenty of ways to catch the bad eggs. I don't
think we need managers chasing after us waving copies of white papers like
mad axemen.
