<<Could we ask what makes psychiatrists act as they do - and get so
upset when the rest of the world does not think as they do?>>
But surely this is one of the attitudes which distinguish the specialist
from the generalist? The specialist sees the world through the filters of
his/her specialty while the generalist simply has to open up the view a
bit. As for thinking----how many psychiatrists or other specialists do you
know who are capable of sustained thought? I actually know two psycs who
are good thinkers but I have met umpteen specialists who are very stupid
indeed outside their own fields.
Second thought---many psycs still use the medical model (what they thought
they learned in medical school) in their work. The medical model doesn't
actually work but it is much simpler to stick to it than to open up the
mind to the undifferentiated chaos lurking in the minds of people with
mental illness.
