<<Any of you into alternative energy?>>
We live up a hill with wind coming at us along two valleys----nearly always
windy and usually from the south. Perfect spot for a windfarm soo I
checked prices---around £400 (shop-soiled) gets you about 1kW and then you
have to build the tower. Then you need a storage system--maybe 12 volt
car batteries? I tried to keep my old ones but my wife keeps throwing them
out. But at any rate, doable.
Solar energy I used to think a non-starter up here but recently I noticed
how solar powered calculators work steadily day after day so I shall
investigate that.
Then there is water power---it rains a lot in Ireland so all you need is a
hill and a drain for the power. A wee generator, some gearing arrangement
and a water wheel should give a bit of energy.
Thing about all the alternatives is that you need a lot of gear to generate
decent amounts of electricity----so you either spend a lot of money and
time or you decide to make do with less.
If the crash comes then I expect that we shall sleep while dark, work while
light, live off the neighbour's sheep and cows and generally go back to the
wild.
And if things do crash badly, then the no-brain multitudes in city and town
will come looking for someone to blame so maybe it might not be such a good
idea to be obviously well-prepared.
Just a thought.
