At the IM&T strategy launch UKP40 million was earmarked to connect all
*computerised* practices to the NHSnet. The details are currently
being worked out, but this should mean that your supplier will connect
you to the NHSnet at your practice.
No information is available yet, but I gather there are discussions
about using smtp for email since there have been problems with X.400
(as described by Mary and others on this list). The outcome should
be known fairly soon.

If smtp is the chosen messaging format it should be straightforward
to access GP-UK from your practice machine, but I don't know what the
tariff arrangements are going to be (though the Strategy talks about
central 'top-slicing' to pay for messaging costs).

I don't know the answer to that one, but your supplier should.
