V90 is very line dependent. I get 54.2K every time at home (on a cable - ie
fibre optic) line. At work I get 50.6K on a standard aluminium line, but a
very short one (less than 500 metres at a guess)

I've found HH viable, largely because I discontinued my second phone line,
which makes it cost-neutral (as the tresuary is so fond of saying.)
ISDN is different to a modem connect in that one can assume ISDN will always
reach the advertised speed - except when the server at the other end is
under load. So most UK connects I make, or links to the US before lunchtime,
will run at 64k, double the rate a 33.6 modem achieves. I have seldom
managed to get a V90 modem connect to run faster than 44k, and line noise
frequently knocks them back below this, whereas now I routinely get
downloads running at 7,700 bps.
I probably wouldn't have upgraded the line if I had only had one phone line,
as the expenses isn't worth it. I don't spend that much time getting/reading
e-mail, and I don't use the web that much.
