I would be grateful for some collective wisdom on the issue of overseas bods
using NHS services and their GP registration status. I've had a mild
disagreement with my partners and I would like to be sure of some facts.
We have a Romanian Man in his 50's who has come to live with his Daughter on
our patch. He unfortunately has Lung cancer. His daughter has enquired as to
what the position is vis a vis NHS status etc.
I am not sure if his purpose in coming to UK is to obtain good cancer
treatment or whether it is just an extended stay in this country to spend
time with his daughter, as the enquiry has been a brief one through our
practice manager. The medical advisor at the HA says that we must only take
him on as a private patient and advise him of our charges. We must point
this out to any hospital we may refer him on to and remember re the blood
tests etc... One of my partners simply doesn't belive this advice.
Now my practice has no private patients and we get so few patients like this
that we don't have a system or policy thought out. My partners are all for
registering him as a temp res and are reluctant to bring up charges as a)we
are not "good" at that sort of thing b) he might be termnally ill see (a)
and c) if we get the private/nhs bit wrong we might be had up for breech of
ToS and in front of the GMC!
What would you , or do you do, in your practices?
Can someone simplify the rules for me please?
