Similar experience in my practice 18 months ago (Child)
Felt physically sick for ages
So did most of the staff
Anticipate locals wanting to give you information about the crime so
instruct staff to give the police number directly. Keep it in reception.
Keep a list of Counselling numbers for distressed locals in reception. We
obviously saw the immediate relatives but it seemed we were seeing uncle Tom
Cobbly and all. It helped decrease consultations.
I was once very badly manipulated by the police on a separate occasion
involving an assault on a policeman which I witnessed by one of my patients
who had renal colic. My natural sense of justice was with the officer and
the police chief skillfully persuaded me to impart much more than I should
have about my patient. I phoned the MDU later who said I would be lucky not
to be sued by the patient. (I wasn't)
So sounds a bit trite but do phone the MDU/MPS and discuss the finer points
of the law that you are just about to run into.
