Unless HMG invest in those (few?) still enthusiastic and public-spirited
doctors (perhaps I may be one), who may have seen the *opportunities* in
PCGs potentially outweigh their *threats*, there is no doubt that we all
should consider going the way of the dentists/Risks/Foxes. Primary care
is where it should all be at. Other countries are striving to copy our
system, which is cheap & efficient, *but* has been based historically on
British goodwill above all else. This appears to have evaporated along
with Euro-scepticism for the majority, and may prove costly for everyone
(especially the patients) in the longer term.
I am totally in favour of the concept of PCGs (in fact I led a PCAPs bid
for a Primary Care Agency last year *before* the White Paper) but I
cannot see any of the Government's good words coming to fruition without
the necessary investment in the workforce. The public and government
want accountability/quality/equity (governance by any other name) -
well, they're gonna have to pay for it in time and money. If neither are
forthcoming, those of us who can do something else will.
