Very sad situation for a lot of people.
Few years ago, one of my patients, a 17-year old lad, committed a
gruesome murder of a little old lady; who was also my patient.
The lad's mother (one of mine, again), informed on him. He was
convicted and is now serving a life sentence.
I see the mother occasionally and the brother frequently.
There are lots of issues here, most of which will be obvious.
In these situations, one has to cooperate with the law and its agents.
'Be factual' is the gold standard.
Dealing with the aftermath is a different matter and will depend on the
circumstances of each case and each family. When I see the mother, I
enquire about the lad who's inside and so on. She needed a lot of
support at the beginning, especially for feelings of guilt and remorse.
She actually had to testify against him (!).
Very sad.
