We have probably started about 20 patients on Montelukast so far; none on
Zafirlukast. The impression is generally favourable. It seems to give a
useful improvement in peak flows and patients like it. One woman says it
has transformed her life. One patient gave it up because of nocturia ( not
on the data sheet as a side effect), and another because of head ache. We
have one case of Churg-Strauss (No, I had never heard of it before either).
Apparently there have been 8 cases of this described in the US associated
with Zafirlukast, but not with Monte...I suspect that this is being
unmasked by the reduction of steroid dose possible after the introduction
of the leukotriene antagonist, rather than it being a true side effect.
