In 1956 when Nasser nationalised the Suez Canal Company, the French and
British directors of the company withdrew all the pilots who guided the
convoeys of ships through difficult and hazardous navigation. That
action was meant to bring navigation through the canal to a standstill.
(it didn't because Nasser was prepared).
The moral of the story is this: in difficult waters, you need the
pilots more than the skippers or the crew. One pilot, one ship and the
world is at your command.
