Moving on. Freelancing and freewheeling.
I promised to tell you what I intend to do now that I have resigned my
GP commission.
That resignation was purely a personal matter that became necessary for
the following reasons:
1. Enhance my independence and safeguard my intellectual freedom
(never had a herd instinct, no, not Andrew)
2. Correct the anomaly, perhaps the paradox, of me being a GP (never
had it in me)
The developed world will continue to struggle with the thorny issue of
ballistic health care costs. The realisation, and admission, that what
we do is unsustainable will come all too soon. PCGs are a
manifestation of that struggle and an attempt, albeit a feeble one, to
provide a resolution.
I have stated in the past my opposition to PCGs for personal reasons.
They may become successful, who knows; *but*, I still believe that the
only way they can have a chance success is the concept of 'The Firm'
Midge and I talk about a lot.
Now, on to the moving on bit. This is what I intend to do:
A. In the free radical thinkers domain:
The AlphaMed Caucus (working title, not final):
I wish to invite a small number of free radical thinkers to join me in
setting up the group that will have the following functions and more:
a) a nucleus for thought, philosophy and new paradigms
b) an independent policy and solutions think tank
c) a research centre
d) a bridge between health care givers, receivers, planners,
managers, industry and law makers
e) a spin off commercial operation
The AlphaMed Caucus will do mostly thinking. It will write and aim to
publish pamphlets, essays, full studies and other publications. It
will also identify and resource specific research projects and
undertake fee earning work when appropriate.
If you have what it takes and are interested, send me your 'other' CV
by private email and tell me what it is that you have that would
benefit both you and the Caucus. There are one or two people from this
country and abroad that I wish to invite directly.
B. On the drawing board:
'The Good Doctor':
The Good Doctor Ltd is the company I set up with one other currently
developing exciting ideas and products around issues of excellence of
medical care. Matters of IP prevent me from further elaboration at
this stage.
C. In the paying the bills domain:
1. Editor and webmaestro of 'Health Informatics Europe'. Pre-launch
prototype site is at: http://hi-europe.co.uk
I have a year to make the journal a voice in European health
informatics
2. I shall write and speak on the interface between medicine and the
internet
3. I shall write and speak on 'cyber-culture' heart of the matter
stuff
4. A small and very select private medical practice in Brighton (Risk
and Co, Physicians and Apothecaries to the Gentry of Hove and Brighton.
Accounts and mail order are available). I hope not to see more than
5-10 patients a week.
5. Practice management and IT/Internet technologies consultancy and
research office. All reasonable commissions gratefully received as of
today.
6. There are one or two kind offers to explore opportunities that have
come from members of gp-uk. Thank you to those who've made them.
That's it for now.
The gains are many: I'll work from home, I'll get my perch by the sea
at last to sit and think and dream up ideas, see more of my growing 5
yr old son, not bothering much about all that 'washing and dressing',
to name but a few.
Some gains cannot be cast in words.
Ahmad
