I have problems with the central database approach, where the repository
becomes a commodity in its own right, and subject to possible abuse
(discussions at length in the past). The dial in requires a difficult
authentication routine which has to done each time a patient walks in. It
also implies tied-line access, which currently is a lot more expensive (to
the pharmacist?) than batch delivery in advance.

There is some interesting work in Scotland involving the use of a 'clearing
house system' for prescriptions. The script is transmitted electronically
to a
central location and can then be 'picked up' on-line by any chemist. Still
in
early development but they seemed to have addressed many of the security
issues.
