Can I first say that I won't quote anyone who helps me out here. I just
need to fill a gap in my knowledge.
First off, is the UK polio vaccination schedule still based wholly on
Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV) (Sabin)?
The background to the above is that in the US which is now officially
polio free, cases of vaccine associated polio (VAP) outnumber the zero
recorded cases of 'wild' polio. Consequently and presumably in part due
to public pressure, within the last few years the Centre for Disease
Control has altered it's recommendations to include both mixed schedules
of OPV and Inactivated Polio Virus (IPV) (Salk) and IPV alone. If anyone
is interested in further details we have a list of resources in our
"Polio Virus, Vaccine and Eradication" Directory at
http://www.zynet.co.uk/ott/polio/lincolnshire/directory/polio.html
I would add that the last time I looked, although the UK has no reported
cases of 'wild' polio in recent years, I don't think we are officially
classed as polio free. Additionally I am aware of two possible cases of
VAP in the UK during the last 18 months, possible in the sense that I
believe them to be VAP from conversations with those involved but I
haven't seen any diagnostic records.
Returning to my questions, the second and last is if a patient (or
parent in the case of a child) specifically requested either a mixed
IPV/OPV or IPV alone would that be a problem?
Many Thanks,
Chris
