Certainly not for metronidazole and the current (English) generic
prescribing rate is well over 90%. For erythromycin, the issue is
more complex and hinges on whether you believe that fancy
formulations of erythromycin base (Erymax) or the ethylsuccinate salt
(Erythroped) have better GI tolerance than erythromycin base. These
arguments have been running for as long as I can remember and
AFAIK no proper trial has ever provided a conclusive answer. FWIW,
'plain' erythromycin accounts for about 90% of solid oral
erythromycin prescribed in England.
