That the UK leads in one European League is not a source of rejoicing (we
have the highest rate of teenage pregnancies in Europe- 7 times that in
Holland)
Also the numbers of unplanned and problem pregnancies in the female age
group 20-24--as judged by the termination rate-- is painfully high.
PC4 prescribed by specially trained pharmacists according to an agreed
protocol could prevent some of those disasters . It won't happen stat as
there needs to be legislative change, but it's not NEARLY so easy to get
post-coital contraception, especially for the young as you imagine. Not
all GPs are as tactful, empathic, available and knowledgeable about
confidentiality as all those on gp-uk!! In country areas there are not
frequent enough FP clinics nor GP sessions to provide the help that women
need.
The protocolwould emphasise the need to consider long term contraception .
Can it be ethical to deny easy access to the provision of such a safe
medication as PC4 ??
It's always so sad to face a woman wrestling with decisions on an
unplanned pregnancy that could have been prevented by timely prescription
of PC4.
