The BMA Ethics DEpt, produced a good paper about this : we set up a group
which included some doctors in recovery. The document finally went to
Council, was accepted and the recomendations (?sp -its late!) THUS
BECAME BMA POLICY. IT DOES ALL SOUND RATHER DRY, but I think was really
significant as the BMA then officially were at least admitting the
reality of the problem ,and its scale. If we managed any otheer group of
patients with a killer disease in the same negligent way that the
profession manages (?!?)its addicted members, we'd deserve to be struck
off.
