what a superb response from Andrew - he manages to put it so clearly.
I too have one hanging over me from when I was a hospital junior - in
fact I think they will probably be after the consultant - but I am in
the frame cos I was the only one present for quite some time (although
entirely my fault).
When I got the first letter I felt physically sick and shaken (I had
never reacted this way to anything in my life before).
I felt I couldnt go to work, I felt i couldnt tell anyone. We were into
the time when cover was via the Trust/HA (ie MPS/MDU not providing full
cover - but I had their basic membership) - the Trusts solicitors were
horrible and I had v little support from my defence/protection
organisation.
2 years later I had another letter asking if I wanted to add anything
more to my statement.
Then there was one more letter.
Silence since - i do not know if it was dropped/settled/went to court
and I wasnt called -
*and I have to date been unable to bring myself to make the
phone call and find out*
I am tougher now - I take the line that I do my best - and that I will
still be sued
I tell all med students and registrars to get their heads around this
now.
**we need to protect ourelves by learning to live with this relatively
new fact of life**
Someone just left the list - he has cancer - I think he/family may think
there was a delay in diagnosis - I do not think so (bu my God have I
spent some time going over it in my mind) - they may be planning action
- I am upset - but not about the action but about the poor chap, who I
have cared for and who I would have liked to continue to care for in his
new illness.
I see this as progress within myself and my coping mechanisms along the
lines of what I wrote above - and in keeping with Andrews observations.
Cheers all :)
