Kurt Vonnegut: 'Cat's Cradle'. As per the teachings of Bokonon.
(ISBN 0-14-002308-9)
Basically, a 'Karass' is a vertical association of people and things.
It may go back millions of years or go forward millions of years. Each
'Karass' is like a cell whose memebrs may never meet, or, when they do,
it is almost instant recognition of belonging to the same cell.
Bit like saying there are only 500 people in the world and the rest are
cardboard cutouts.
A 'Granfaloon' is any horizontal (and consequently artificial)
asociation: any nation, any religion, the Association of American
Daughters, the Rotary Club, etc,etc.
