Tough Love - something to do with setting limits, not being manipulated,
having sufficent self-regard and self-esteem, not equating caring with
capitulating etc, etc. Maybe we all need some behavioural psychotherapy.

Those of you with Kids will know the benefits of the controlled crying
technique for kids who get into a bad sleeping habit. "Tough Love" the
Americans call it. It works but is emotionally and physically exhausting
(sometimes)
We need to apply tough love to our patients AND to our receptionists (who
often side with the expectation of a visit) AND to our partners because it
is hard to say NO I AM NOT COMING. I no longer find it hard but I recognise
that many do. Believe me the rewards are great.
Maybe we could have a slogan contest and the Dr Patient partnership could
print some nice posters for the next Easter campaign
" Just say NO, the Guilt will go"
"Get in your car, the surgery's not Far"
" Need a GP, then get a taxi!"
"Don't reach for the phone...Just leave home"
