Katie,
I could not agree more. IMHO the hospital service suffers badly from the lack of
a relatively static junior grade who have gained heaps of experience rather than
training or a career. I accept that under present hospital working conditions
these might not be particularly attractive posts but imagine how much more
easily one could do an SHO / reg job after several years at it.
I had a slight taste of this when after my VT I took a year out of medicine then
took a temporary JHO job. Second time around and after 4 years of experience it
was much easier for myself, consultants and patients. One dares to ask
questions of both nursing staff and consultants e.g. "Just exactly why does this
patient need all of these 'routine' investigations"? Met with blank stares at
first but very soon with mutual respect and mutual education!
There are plenty of opportunities for a 'career' in GP as others have noted.
