Whilst working on Mustique Island, I had USD150,000 to spend on
equipping the medical facilities.
I decided to be a patriot and buy British. I called up various big
suppliers in the UK. OK, I did not have *exact* details and specs of
what I wanted. I was meerely trawling for stuff. They could not help
at all. Many said something like "write to us and we'll think about
it". Since mail took 2 weeks to get there and 2 weeks to get back, I
was not prepared to go down that route specially when some heavy
residents were on my back to get it done.
I called a firm in Miami. I said that I had vague requirements and
wasn't sure exactly what I wanted and was seeking advice really. The
guy said: "no problem doc, I'll send a man over" (!).
He did send a man over for a very un-confirmed potential order. The
man flew 5 hours just to see me! He got the order. Many American
firms got my 150K dollars. The price differential was needless to say,
one dollar to the pound!
It's a different world over there.
Phil: you wouldn't have a job in the States by any chance?
(incidentally, I'll be in DC 3-7 October)
