Too true. Who does? I don't, do you? I prescribe antibiotics for PEOPLE,
people who have illnesses, people who have needs, beliefs etc. - you
know the rest. If I manage to occasionally cure a disease then so much
the better. But then - difficult to measure what we do, isn't it?
One of my partners said something to the effect that the GP is the last
refuge for non-judgemental care of the needy, the difficult, the
disillusioned, the helpless etc. in an increasingly hostile world. That
and the sad illusion of freedom offered by the lottery. Personally I
think that Marx got it wrong, its not religion but the NHS which is the
opium of the masses, me included of course.
If we remove the symbol of care which a prescription evinces then I bet
a new need will arise to replace its loss. Remember specs and teeth in
1949 - how there would be a short run then it would calm down? Nah!
Only a core re-definition of the NHS will cut down on its use, but then
that will translate into votes lost. Probably.
Regards
George
