First, choose your pointing device. I prefer nipples (!): you may
prefer a glidepad. Its interesting that the top notch Tosh, Compaq
and IBMs use nipples. Avoid DSTN screens. Check out:
Toshiba Tecra 550CDT (UKP 2200 incl P&P + VAT)
Compaq Armada 7770DMT (UKP 2167 incl P&P + VAT)
Both solid machines, good power management, *3 year warranty*,
1024x768 TFT, 32MB RAM etc. The Compaq has built in modem and mains
transformer (so fewer bits to carry). The Tosh has better overall
reputation (if PC mags are to be believed). However, they both
require you to swap between CD-ROM and floppy.
Having used cheaper alternatives I believe you do actually get what
you pay for with laptop machines.
On the other hand you could check out a G3 Apple laptop. The latest
machines look *gorgeous*, but a bit out of the price range perhaps?
Cheers,
Trims.
