I'm glad because the firm of solicitors have been exceptionally
good to me over the last 12-18 months and have instructed me
to prepare well over 100 reports. I really didn't want to
appear too dense by asking directly about this "conduct money"

Now, that's what I like to hear. However, the case has now
been delayed, and will (almost certainly - they mostly do)
settle at the last possible moment.
