<<Well don't you think it's one of the downsides to being self-employed?
But there are advantages which more than make up for it in my view. Eg
trusts
are now starting to move consultants onto 3 or 5 yr contracts.
"Keep quiet if you want to keep your job" goes on in plenty of other
industries>>
Well yes but any company working that way (treating highly skilled and
valuable employees like dirt) will not survive all that long.
I would be interested to hear about the short term contracts---esp in view
of the dire consultant shortage in some
fields---for example psychiatry where even the job ads now headline high
salaries.
As for the advantages of our peculiar version of self-employment, yes I
agree that being able to speak
out is wonderful. But I really cannot think of any other advantage and
while it pains me to criticise my
chosen profession, how many GPs use that particular advantage at all? let
alone put it to good use?
The major hassle which several co-ops have suffered over the last year or
two could have been avoided
with a little use of the local media---in the nicest possible way of
course. But there are none so blind etc as
I found out when I tried to persuade my local co-op colleagues to let me
give reports of excellent patient care down at co-op
to local media.
