Known in the trade as "Everything before the 'BUT' is bullshit".
e.g. "You showed a good grasp of basic blah-blah BUT we have a few
difficulties with your attitude to ....".
I had a very enjoyable consulting course where we successfully persuaded our
trainers that the whole thing becomes a stupid game because everyone (including
trainees) knows the rules, ignores the pre-BUT waffle and waits for the post-BUT
truths.
