I will doubtless find out more at the next GPC meeting. There never has been
an agreed national ie Red Book item of service fee for flu vac. We are hence
entitled to charge a fee for administering the vaccine. (We are encouraged
to immunise the at risk groups identified by CMO.) We can also claim
dispensing fees under para 44 rules for supplying vaccine which is quite
lucrative ( at least it pays for the nurse time involved!). Some HAs did
come up with locally agreed item of service fees. It is those that have been
outlawed. This again illustrates the need for effective national
negotiation.

Peter Fellows.
