Sir David Carter, Cheif Medical Officer for Scotland opened the Surgeons
Internet Cafe http://www.rcsed.ac.uk/library/internetcafe.htm at The
Royal College of Surgeons http://www.rcsed.ac.uk/ of Edinburgh today,
Friday 28th August. The cafe will give access to modern IT technology
for college fellows and trainee doctors. The program of courses for the
Internet cafe is at http://www.rcsed.ac.uk/Diary/calcours.htm
The Surgeons Internet Cafe at the Royal College of Surgeons is a
resource which will be the base for the information technology meetings
already being held regularly at the college and may become a useful
"bolt-on" facility to delegates to other types of meetings such as
Educating Consultants.
Situated in the heart of the College's magnificent Playfair building,
the College Library already has an excellent collection of surgical
texts, journals, videotapes and compact disks and medical databases,
suitable for the full range of needs of surgeons - from study material
for candidates aspiring to Fellowship to the Continuing Medical
Education of Fellows, Associate Fellows and Diplomates.
It is a natural development that we should now extend the range of tools
and services to include the internet, with all its possibilities, and
the various standard software. There are web sites all over the world
which have information of interest and use to doctors and surgeons - to
all in fact. The facility to send and receive email is one which has
many benefits and is still unfamiliar to some. The access to word
processing, slide design, scanning, database and spreadsheet software is
available in a pleasant and quiet environment
