Yes,
Depression can be a fluctuating illness in terms of severity.
This would give all those still working an automatic label of mild.
For some people their coping mechanism may be work.
Attendance at work does not imply normal function.
This is supported by examples of doctors who continue seeing patients
only to attempt suicide after hours, who disappear when their partners
had no idea anything was wrong, who contemplate suicide in the small
hours.
These are surely severely depressed.
The two parts cannot be linked by one defining the other.
They are useful, but separate bits of information.
