Question asked--<<Can anyone explain to me why steroids don't seem to make
a herpes infection
run rampant as they logically should?>>
Because traditional teaching is that it is not specifically a viral
infection---rather something causing inflammation of the facial nerve in
that bony canal whose name I forget with consequent pressure palsy.
Work done years ago showed that the majority of cases had full or good
recovery without any treatment at all.
Don't know about England but some of the A/E SHOs over here are lacking in
experience and as well as needing to do something would probably not be
well up on the literature.
Someone mentioned bilat facial nerve palsies----used to be that the common
causes of this very uncommon phenomenon were Guillain-Barre and
Sarcoidosis.
