>As a patient, I have to say
I look on with dismay when I see my GP get out that little A5 size
pouch; my medical history would probably fill a few filing draws!<
Isn't it even smaller than A5? The population of the UK is around, say,
55million. That's constitutes an awful lot of staff time imputting the
filing cabinets into an awfully expensive lot of computers. The average GP
has approaching 1,800 patients and few have any hope of being able to fund
that input and is it really worth the enormous expense - and time - of
doing it? Would you prefer that money to be spent on your post-polio
patients or your GP's (and 30,000 other GPs') computer? And it's not
really much use just scanning the records in because they still would need
to be read to get a full history. Software would be needed to extract that
history (if possible) - more expense.
I think we are in danger of attempting to purchase a Rolls-BMW when we can
only afford a VW Beetle and by giving the IT wallahs full-reign at this
stage we will end up with a Brabant in the pawn-shop - or walking.
