hi jeff
every pcg should employ someone like you, (expert resource independent
of the HA), your work could be very usefully linked to the pcgs clinical
governance needs, (cme, maag etc etc)and all GPs should be able to
accept a degree of impartial scrutiny by now; and enjoy it :-);
your remit being that old favourite _cost-effectiveness_ (reducing
antibiotics for otitis media, increasing O2, decreasing inhaled
steroids, for copd
beware being piggy in the middle when the GPs start to squabble though,
especially if you're overseeing an obscure precsribing
(perverse?)incentive scheme involving £

Subject: RE: Pharmaceutical Advice to PCGs
David,
>Pharmaceutical advice from companies? Not drug companies I hope!
No, I was thinking of either company chemists e.g. Lloyds, Hills or
Boots,
or companies formed specially to manage PCG's and supply pharmacists as
well
as other useful things.
>There are a couple of initiatives in South Yorkshire were pharmacists
>are helping practices with their prescribing i.e.
>reducing/rationalising.
I'm in a similar sort of thing at the moment, but it's very much tuned
to
the needs of the HA rather than the surgeries.
>Depending on your point of view it seems to work
>From my point of view, I've probably leant more than I've helped.
>I certainly want my PCG having this kind of help.
To address the needs of the HA, the needs of the PCG or the needs of the
individual surgery?
>Whether the other GPs will agree is an other matter.
It can't be much fun having someone looking over your shoulder, I have
an
admiration for those who allow it to happen. But it cuts both ways, what
I
do and see in the surgery effects what I do in the pharmacy. Think of it
as
paying to train pharmacists to work to the same guidelines as you;)
