Some one has in USA. There was an article in a recent New Scientist
(I think). The 'manufacturers' raved about it (of course) and were
looking for somewhere in the UK to pilot it. As I recall the price
per slide was greater than current human checking, and it was only
marketed to check for abnormalities that had to be checked by a human
anyway. Still it could concentrate the workload by removing the
dross. That is if it can trusted to have less false negatives than a
human.
