The average age of our reception staff is 55 - with half of them in
their 60s. I have mentioned practice development plans to them - the
reaction is that they are quite happy as they are, enjoy the work as it
is, and do not want further education forced upon them.
One of them joked " you mean pre-retirement courses?" - maybe so, but
what benefit does that give the practice or the patients?
I object to having so much of my own income dependant on other people
jumping through hoops, whether it is patients attending screening
programmes or staff attending courses. Until those required to jump
through the hoop can see a significant prize for themselves on the other
side then we, put in the role of ringmasters, will always suffer. Yet
we have not been given sufficient power or resources to create the
carrot. We need bigger whips ;-) (excuse mixed metaphors)
