IANAGP but played clarinet/sax for many years. You said that your patient
had installed new harder reeds. It might be useful to revert to softer reeds
to see if the symptoms persist. I had exactly the same feelings when I
switched to harder reeds until I managed to build the jaw muscles up enough
to tighten the embouchure to compensate for actually blowing harder than I
was before. Then my breathing settled down back into a controlled state as
it were.
