ancient thread: to do with how to manage a)neonatal chicken pox and
b)(separate patient)whether to remove coil in pregnant lady
wanted to pass on thanks to those who -mentored- me at the end of a
stressful week; corny but the benefits were immense to me personally
on a) the Paed still hasn't got back to me despite 2 reminders; my own
digging around found
http://www.cps.ca/english/statements/ID/id94-04.htm#NEO
as far as i can see it isn't the age of the neonate that matters but the
timing of the appearance of the mothers chicken pox in relation to the
day of birth. if the mother develops chicken pox between 5 days before
or 2 days after the child is born then there is a significant risk of
serious neonatal infection (and we should admit); this is because there
hasn't been time for protective maternal IgG to be transferred to the
baby: this sort of makes sense.
on b) still don't know, but medicolegally it would appear to be safer to
assume that the coil is a danger and to remove it; goes against the
grain really but there it is (haven't unearthed any decent references)
