Well, Trefor, to us colonials across the pond an 'esoteric' posting in
exotic Manchester might be exciting ;->>
Anyway, unlike those before me on this thread who point out that they
are *not* looking for a new job, as a recent recipient of my last
degree, I am looking - and it is interesting to see what is out there.
(NOT a research associate in Manchester, BTW :->.)
I tend to agree with Trish and Roy that a clear title allows you to hit
'delete' and bin academic offers if they hold no interest and that these
postings are not in the same category as the recent XXX spam we've seen
here.
I wasn't around for your flaming last year but I disagree with that as
well. I don't believe academic lists should allow advertising campaigns
but if a regular member knows of something with clinical or academic
merit on the market he or she should be free to describe any merits or
demerits (viz. all the recent discussions on proprietary software). This
shouldn't be limited (as it currently is) to only those who can
explicitly disclaim paternity or proprietary interest. (I know, I
know... where is the line drawn...) *Regular* member might be a start. I
think it would soon become apparent if a new member were on the list for
primarily commercial purposes. After all, this list *is* a bit more
informal than many I've seen....:-))
Also, there is no hesitancy on this list to include announcements for
academic conferences, to which I have no objection. For those who have
put together one or two of these, there is really little difference in
the motivation in advertising for a conference and anything else. Low
attendance this year, no conference next year....
Lastly, the academic lists over here that I am aware of (Academic Family
Medicine or "Family-L" for example) routinely run announcements of job
postings and conferences - though nothing more. (I am currently talking
to a couple of them :->>)
