Bradford and District Branch of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great
Britain
`
Branch Chairman's Evening Tuesday 4th August 1998
Visit to the Thackray Medical Museum, Leeds
(kindly sponsored by Freeman Pharmaceuticals)
Dear Colleagues,
As we currently celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the NHS, this year's
Chairman's Evening will be a trip to the Thackray Medical Museum in Leeds
from 7.20pm on Tuesday 4th August 1998. The museum is adjacent to St James'
Hospital and contains a Victorian Pharmacy and the Wilkinson Collection of
Drug Jars amongst many other exhibits. A Leeds street from the turn of the
century has been recreated to demonstrate the city's health problems at the
time and even the smell of the street has been reproduced!
The museum has a wide variety of exhibitions to suit all tastes and much of
it is of particular interest to us as pharmacists. If you have not been
before then this is an ideal opportunity to see the museum at a much reduced
rate. Even if you have visited before, then you will appreciate that the
museum deserves a second visit and a short interesting talk by its director
Mr Mike Cooper will illuminate the evening. Why not make up a party from
your shop or department?
The price, which includes a buffet, is £4.00 for guests and only £2.50 for
Bradford Branch members. The evening has been kindly sponsored by Freeman
Pharmaceuticals who are a Harrogate-based generics wholesaler. Other groups
may be looking around the museum at the same time, however we have booked
the James Allen room upstairs in the museum solely for the Branch. The
programme for the evening is as follows:
7.20pm onwards Arrive at museum. Tell the cashier that you are with the
Pharmaceutical Society and go upstairs to the James Allen Room for coffee.
After your coffee have a wander around the museum
8.15pm Meet back in the James Allen Room for a buffet supper to be
followed at
8.30pm for a talk by Mr Mike Cooper on the exhibits in the museum
8.50pm to 10pm Continue looking around the museum
The museum is on Beckett Street, which is two miles out of Leeds City
Centre. To get there, follow the signposts for St James' Hospital. There is
plenty of free parking in front of the museum. If you would like any more
details please ring Mark Donaghy on 01274 574641. If you would like to
attend please send payment with the tear-off slip below before Tues 28th
