Irony was tremendous today.
As duty Dr there were a fair number of people waiting for me at the
beginning of my emergency time at 9.30am(after 1 hour of booked
appointments). One particular man was behaving in an extremely aggressive
fashion "fxxxx" and aggressively demanding to be seen before everyone
else. He was so aggressive and intimidating that I had to push the
panick button in the practice. He was blocking the entrance to my room
and I wished to see the next patient whose turn it was-Miss C.
She insisted I see him and his (sleeping) baby first.I refused to see
him with the door shut because I didn't feel safe. This he refused to
accept so kind Miss C he allowed to sit at the back of the room.
During the consultation the police arrived-but their presence would have
exacerbated the situation and I asked them to leave. I arranged the not
very sick baby's admission whilst asking SS to check that this new baby
who wasn't registered yet as not at risk.
I then could see Miss c.I by then was quite shaky and not my usual self
when she described her spontaneous bruising and her period that had
started and was embarassingly heavy.
I did the bloods and arranged where she would be in the afternoon when
the results were available.
During the afternoon her platelets came in at 6 !!
She is now in hospital it was another story tracking her down because
she wasn't in and I was frightened she had collapsed at home and sent
the police round to check! However they left her a note with my mobile
number on it and she called me several hours later.
The irony was she had let this abusive intimidating man in front because
he insisted babies come first and she was truly ill.
