Let's not get too excited about this. Mr Blair's speech was written
by his *political* advisers. And we've heard all about them this
week, haven't we?
Extending surgery hours and/or the number of appointments to satisfy
the consumers whim of instant access at any time would involve
increased costs and overheads (doctors, staff, heating etc.).
The retail sector passes on the cost of extended hours by increasing
prices. The public sector can only do this by raising taxes, something
the public has shown itself unwilling to vote for over a number of
years.
The public gets what the public votes for.
