Exploiting the Internet in the NHS
Call for Participation
I am Assistant Director of Information at Sheffield Health, having
spent 23 years in the NHS, involved in planning, information, research
and IT. I am currently in my final year of an MA in Information
Technology Management by distance learning at the University of
Sheffield.
I am undertaking a research project on the capability of NHS
organisations to exploit the Internet and Internet Technology for my
dissertation. The research has the support of Graham Jones, Trent
Regional Director of Information. My intention is that the research
should provide information to assist NHS organisations to exploit the
Internet and internet technology in the context of the new agenda set
out in "The New NHS - modern.dependable". It will offer a fuller
understanding of the opportunities and the issues which need to be
addressed.
In view of the Primary Care focus of the white paper "The new NHS
modern.dependable" and the emphasis on new technology I hope to
involve a number of GPs with experience of the Internet as
participants in the research.
Ian Trimble and Rob Wilson have kindly supported the use of GP-UK to
call for participation in the research. The GP survey questionnaire
can completed on-line at:
http://www.dacon.force9.co.uk/surveypc.html
or by following the link from my home page in the signature below.
In the context of this research, Internet technology includes the
Internet, the World Wide Web, electronic mail, electronic newsgroups
and bulletin boards, web browser access to dynamic databases, private
intranets and extranets (i.e. intranets which can be accessed by
authorised external users), teleconferencing and telemedicine.
The following specific issues are to be investigated:
1. How can Internet/intranet technology be exploited by NHS
organisations?
2. To what extent do NHS organisations have the competencies to
develop and implement a successful strategy for the use of this
technology and to take advantage of innovative applications of
information technology?
3. What are the perceived success factors for exploiting this
technology?
4. What are the barriers and constraints and how can they be overcome?
The research is being conducted using a combination of methods
including a postal survey of Health Authorities and Trusts, web-based
questionnaires, interviews and case studies.
Full details of the research proposal, including a preliminary
literature review and bibliography, together with my CV can be found
on my web site (URL below).
The questionnaire should take no more than 20 minutes to complete.
All respondents providing an email address will be notified of the
findings when they are available in the autumn.
