The future of community services lies in the hands of the PCGs
and so, of course, the Trust managers will want to put senior
executive managers on PCG Boards.
However, it is up to the PCG community to decide who sits on
the Board and the sensible thing to do would be to ask the
Community Nurses/HV who they wish to represent them.
Whoever they choose will have to get used to sitting on
committees (probably in the evening) and taking
time away from patient care to read papers/ read HSCs /
read minutes/ prepare papers / present papers / liaiase
with other nursing staff/ and will need to be able to think strategically
- on behalf of patients, other nurses, and the PCG.
This role will not appeal to many grass roots nurses :-(
We have opted for a local nurse manager to represent community
nurses, but there is an ongoing debate as to whether practice
nurses should represent themselves. One good thing has come
out of this, the local practice nurses are finally getting together
and networking.
