Sorry about the delay in replying to the thread.
Why does the college *need* to be useful to anyone other than it's
members?
Why do members and *Fellows* think that a bit of academic discipline
enables them to preach to their colleagues, or worse, to advise govt. on
terms and conditions?
I have no axe to grind against academic colleagues. Indeed, the
profession *needs* tutors and teachers and researchers. But it does
*not* need 30,000 researchers etc.
I think the College should be a 'club' open to people who want to join,
not a quasi-consultoid *Body* that has a statutary function like the
other Royal Colleges. Surely as a profession we are mature enough now
not to have to ape the "real" doctors like physicians and surgeons.
Making the MRCGP an effective entrance exam to General Practice smacks
of hubris and paternalism. How many entrants to the exam would
*willingly* take it just for professional self-esteem if they did not
feel pressurisedinto it?
