CAMPAIGN FOR MEDICAL PRIVACY
Confidentiality of identifiable health data is an over-riding concern for patients, an ethical duty for health professionals, and a legal demand on provider organisations-NHS and private, primary and secondary care alike.
Consultation on HSC 1998/089
Implementing the Recommendations of the Caldicott Report
CONSULTATION PAPER ON "CALDICOTT GUARDIANS" AND NHS STRATEGIC TRACING SERVICE
€Closing date for responses to this consultation paper is June 30. A meeting has been arranged, under the auspices the Medical Womens' Federation, the Freedom of Information Campaign and Privacy International to examine the impact of these proposals on medical privacy.
€A technical presentation on the privacy issues which should be addressed in responses to HSC 1998/089 will be made by the Foundation for Information Policy Research, a recently launched educational charity, (Director Caspar Bowden and Chairman Ross Anderson of Cambridge Computer Laboratories)
€There will be ample opportunity for questions and discussion. Attendees will be able to consider whether to join a proposed new organisation which campaigns specifically for the protection of medical privacy.
VENUE : BMA HOUSE
DATE : THURSDAY, JUNE 25 1998
TIME : 6.00 for 6.30 -8.00 meeting
€NOTE : The Caldicott Committee identified 86 flows of identifiable personal health data NOT RELATED TO PATIENT CARE in the NHS. Without reference to patient groups, the Committee concluded that 51 of these flows were "justified " and 35 "partially justified". This was a significant piece of research, of great importance to patients and healthcare workers. Do the Committee's conclusions meet the ethical demands on healthcare professionals, and the reasonable expectations of patients? Response to the consultation HSC1998/089 is YOUR organisation's one opportunity to influence implementation of these proposals, and this meeting will provide the necessary technical background.
